Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is a mixed-age Montessori classroom with students ranging from 6-9 years old (1st-3rd grade). They are independent and curious learners who want to know about everything! While we are currently in a distance learning model of learning, I want these students to have the opportunity to come together to enjoy books in a virtual book club setting. This will help us support community building so that when we do get to come together in the classroom again, we will have made meaningful connections with students in our classroom as well as other classrooms.

This group of students love to study the universe and everything it contains, from planets and the solar system to rocks, dinosaurs, and ancient civilizations.

Montessori education allows these students to follow their interests while still meeting the common core state standards. All of their subjects are integrated into their learning, from writing, math, science, history, and reading. Their love of learning guides them to go deeper into subjects and learn all they can about the things that are of interest to them.

My Project

While learning at home makes it hard to build community and a feeling of togetherness, implementing book clubs will help us be able to join together and unify our learning through reading and talking about books together and building their social skills.

This project will put books into student's hands, build community, AND this project will also build skills that they need such as responsibility, respectfully learning to discuss and think about the books they are reading; and students will learn about characters, setting, problems & solutions, connections, retelling, and forming an opinion.
