This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at an amazing school where almost all of my inner city students are from low income backgrounds. They are a mixture of Hispanic and African American students. The student population is also comprised largely of English Language Learners and students with special needs. As teachers, we do everything in our power to make sure students have all of the necessary materials to be successful. Our students and parents are always grateful that we find ways to supply our students with learning tools to make their school year successful.

My Project

My students are starting a writing unit called Bringing History to Life. The unit requires an immense amount of background knowledge and research about the Revolutionary War and the Westward Expansion. I would like to give my students the opportunity to read books and become familiar with how historical perspectives are written. By purchasing these books, students will learn how to research well, cite important sources and recognize conflicting perspectives about a topic.

The books will challenge students to collect, synthesize and organize their research into logical, structured chapters.

These books will prepare students to tackle more independent research endeavors across grades. Many students have researched the Revolutionary War and there is so much content that is not catered to their age group. The books listed below are specifically written for ages 7-12 years old which allow a variety of materials to expand across different reading levels.

Students will also focus on The Revolutionary War subtopics such as the books titles: The Boston Tea Party, The Boston Massacre, Paul Revere and Midnight Ride, Betsy Ross and First Flag, Thomas Jefferson and Declaration of Independence, Surrender at Yorktown and Battle of Lexington and Concord. Students interested in the Westward Expansion will read and research the subtopics California Gold Rush, First Transcontinental Railroad, Homestead Act and Land Rush, Louisiana Purchase, Mexican American War, Oregon Trail, Pony Express, Battle of the Alamo, and the Timeline of Westward Expansion.
