Bringing History into Historical Fiction--Fighting Injustice

My students need 10 engaging, nonfiction titles in sets such as "Breaking Through" and "Getting Away with Murder: The True Story of the Emmett Till Case" to build their background knowledge about the civil rights events we are reading about in our class novel studies.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Canar's classroom raised $511

My Students

Throughout the year, my 7th grade English classes will explore the overarching themes of "Building a Better Society" and "Celebrating Diversity," emphasizing how students can individually contribute to our community and make a difference.

My students come from diverse backgrounds and many live in some of the toughest neighborhoods in our state.

This will be their first year at our junior high and the time when they will be choosing what path they are going to follow in life. Many of our students are reading and writing below grade level, and if we are not able to reach them, support them, and inspire them with rich instructional materials and strategies, they may not make it through to high school--the current graduation rate in our district is only 68%. I hope to create a learning environment in my classroom where students can come together and discuss important issues, identify the connection between literature and their everyday lives, and recognize the power of education and dedication to achieving their own dreams and giving back to their communities.

My Project

These texts will be used in conjunction with thematic novel studies focusing on the essential questions of "How do we overcome prejudice and injustice in society?" and "Can everyone achieve the American Dream?" We will be reading novels such as Esperanza Rising and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and comparing and contrasting the themes and events from the novels with real-life information and experiences from these nonfiction texts in support of the new common core standard, "Reading Literature 7.9: Compare and contrast a fictional portrayal of a time, place, or character and a historical account of the same period as a means of understanding how authors of fiction use or alter history." In addition, students will consider how the lessons and themes from these stories can apply to their own lives and help them build a great future in our society with understanding, hope, and opportunity for all people.

Reading about the leaders, heroes, and even young people like themselves who worked for change and fought injustice will help my students understand the significance of each individual's life on our history and our future.
