My Students

My curious and creative students love school! They love to engaging lessons and they love to learn.

My school has over twenty-five countries represented in it.

My school is also a Title I school and 47% of our population is English Language Learners. My students live in neighborhoods where poverty and crime are the norm. My students face numerous struggles each day. They come from families that are not always able to provide supplies or academic assistance.

Given all of the challenges my students face each day, my hardworking fifth grade class comes to school every day with a smile on their faces and love of learning in their hearts. It is very simple; my students love school. School is their safe place. It is more than just the place where they come to learn. It is the place where they are loved! In many ways, my students are typical fifth graders. They are full of wonder, joy, and laughter. They love books, puzzles, and coloring. Life is not always easy for these kiddos, but they have learned that hard work and perseverance pays off. It is an honor to be their teacher.

My Project

Social Studies is an important part of the day in our fifth grade classroom, probably one of the most important parts of our day. I teach my students about American history and how it is relevant to our world today. My students enjoy hands-on social studies activities, where they can experience history. My students' favorite activity, so far, was our factory assembly line simulation. During this activity, students connected their knowledge of a working environment to those factory workers during the Industrial Revolution. Students were able to grasp the concept of child labor during this simulation and connect it to the child labor laws we have today. Given our huge population of ESL students, engaging activities like this on provide a context for learning while building their language skills. The tools in this much needed project would be used in collaborative, interactive simulations like the assembly line. With the materials included in these kits, such as the writing prompts and maps, students will work in small groups to learn about the content. Each student will use the materials within the kits in rotating stations to engage with the content. For example, students will work collaboratively to label maps, read informational passages about topics in history, like the Second Continental Congress, and use money to create a British tax simulation all within the American Revolution kit.

By donating to this project, you are sparking many students exploration of history.

The tools in this project would help history come alive for my students. My students love the engaging social studies lessons that this project will surely provide. By funding this project, you are encouraging my students to love history!
