it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In our school, students have taken the lead in supporting each other and their families through our small but growing food pantry. This has provided essential food items to those in need, but one major gap remains; pantry staples often lack the ingredients that turn basic supplies into nourishing, flavorful meals. That’s why my students are leading an effort to provide spices, pasta sauce, and storage jars to help families make the most of the food they receive.
This project isn’t just about food; it’s about empowerment.
My students recognize that a lack of seasonings and simple cooking ingredients can make meals feel repetitive or bland, even when families have access to pantry staples like rice, beans, and pasta. They want to change that. By organizing this initiative, students will take ownership of selecting and distributing spices and sauces, learning valuable leadership, organization, and community service skills along the way.
With the materials we’re requesting, students will carefully package spice blends into storage jars, making them easy to distribute. They’ll work together to research and provide culturally relevant seasonings that reflect the diverse backgrounds of our school community. They’ll also create simple meal idea guides to accompany these ingredients, ensuring that families can make the most of what they receive.
This project will not only provide immediate relief to families struggling with food insecurity in our school community, but will also teach students about food justice, community engagement, and the power of small acts of kindness. By supporting this initiative, you’ll be helping students make a meaningful difference: one meal at a time.
