Bringing Fiber Studies into the Elementary Arts Room
My students need yarn, felt, needles, embroidery floss, and embroidery hoops to engage in rich and visually exciting fiber arts lessons.

My Students
I work at a small elementary school on Chicago's Southwest side. Our principal refers to the school as her "Pearl on 79th Street" and I couldn't agree more. Through the hard work of students and staff, the school recently achieved the highest rating according to Chicago Public School's rating system.
Our students are smart, resilient, and inquisitive.
They enjoy engaging in creative investigation and art making, and like all children in all parts of the city, they deserve access to high quality arts instruction and resources.
My Project
These materials would allow students the opportunity to engage in a rich artistic investigation of fiber arts in their elementary art classroom. With these materials students in grades Preschool through 8th grade would be able to learn about sewing, embroidery, and knitting, while making meaningful artwork and building a greater sense of mindfulness and emotional control. Typically elementary art rooms do not have access to a broad range of fiber based curriculum and resources, and these materials would help build the exceptional elementary Art Program I aim to create for students!
These materials will benefit the school for years to come, being utilized in both during school instruction and after school programs.
Primary level students will create puppets and engage in arts integrated instruction, intermediate students will learn how to tell stories about their lives through embroidery, while middle school students will improve their mindfulness and mathematical skills by learning how to knit. All students will benefit from increased fine motor coordination and the sense of calm that happens when one is deeply engaged in fiber based making.
