Bringing Fairy Tales To Life

My students need puppets, masks and other resources to bring our Fairy Tale unit to life.

My Students

Fairy tales are always a classic book that and early childhood teacher can count on to engage their students in reading. The materials I am requesting will let those fairy tales come to life in the different learning centers in my classroom.

Our school is in the heart of East Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY.

The school includes students from Pre-k to eighth grade, and is a melting pot of decedents from the West Indies . It is in a high poverty area and about 95% of the students in the school receive free lunch. There are 18 energetic, three and four year old children in my class but there are not a lot of funds to enrich these students education because of the budget cuts.

My Project

All of the materials I am requesting in this project will be used to enrich my pre-kindergartens Fairy Tales unit. Even though I have lots of Fairy Tale Books in my class, I need materials to help my students interact with the stories more. First we would like some puppets and masks and a Fairy Tale Theme box based on four of the most popular Fairy Tales. The students will use these items to act out the stories to each other on the rug or in our puppet center. This will help build the students comprehension of the stories and help them recall their sequence. The next items are puzzles depicting scenes from different nursery rhymes. I can use these puzzles to help the students build their fine motor and problem solving skills while discussing the stories. And finally we need simple versions of the stories for the students to bring home to read with their families to build their reading skills and to connect the work we are doing with what they are doing at home.

Learning how to read doesn't only come from reading books.

Pre-K students learn through play and these materials will ensure my students learn a lot about Fairy Tales and reading by playing with all of these materials.
