Bringing Energy Efficient, Full Spectrum Lighting to Classroom Aquariums

My Students
My students attend a selective enrollment school in the city of Chicago. They are high-achieving young men and women who have worked very hard to be admitted to a school that challenges them to live every day with courage, compassion, character, and curiosity--our four Cs.
Donating to my project will allow me to further enrich the academic and personal lives of my students.
As a Chicago Public School, our high school is perennially under-funded relative to suburban schools in the Chicago area, and any additional funding is greatly appreciated.
My Project
Each year, my students set up 6-7 distinct biotopes in our classroom. From a blackwater Amazonian basin biotope to a fast-flowing Asian river biotope to a Caribbean reef biotopte, these small worlds teach my students to apply their knowledge of water chemistry, the nitrogen cycle, photosynthesis, animal husbandry, and more. Maybe even more significant is that the seminar is yearlong and requires a yearlong commitment to keeping the aquariums well maintained and the animals thriving, both of which require a lot of hard work, time management, and collaboration with group members. This year, we are running two different nano reefs and would like to invest in technology that allows us to replicate the light cycle of their respective biotopes. The LED light units we are raising funds for can be programmed with smart phones and laptops and will allow my students to design a specific light cycle with a sunrise, sunset, and even lunar phase. Replicating the natural light found in their biotopes will allow their corals to thrive.
