Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students value and appreciate dialogue with one another in independent thought and structured argument. They appreciate time to think and engage in work that is meaningful, creative, and relevant. They realize they are citizens of the world who have important ideas they wish to express to their local community and world.
Often, they have limited exposure to the world outside their city and local region and appreciate when teachers expose them to experiences outside their own.
Because we are a title-one school we are in need of generous donors who can facilitate this kind of exposure by meaningful laboratory experimentation and hands-on experiences.
My Project
One of the most helpful modes of learning for my students is learning by doing. As part of my biology classes we learn about biotechnology. To be specific, we learn how DNA is used as a forensic tool and also as a means of genetic testing.
Over the past several years I have discussed biotechnology with students and have had them read about it, but the hands-on component has been conspicuously lacking.
When students have asked me about the electrophoresis methods, I have shown them video demonstrations, but a hands-on lab would give them first-hand experience.
The equipment I am asking to be funded will need to be used in the classroom, but the process and results with gel electrophoresis can be shared electronically on any number of learning platforms.
Biotechnology is a growing field in the sciences. Providing students with experience using biotech in high school could lead to interest in a career in an exciting and lucrative field.
