3rd Grade is an exciting time where many students move from learning to read to reading to learn. Third graders are vibrant, fun-loving children who seek knowledge in everything around them. They want to learn about anything and everything. They are curious about the world around them and have many questions to ask.
My students are a diverse group of learners who want to see themselves in the curriculum so that they have role models who are like them.
They want to see people who look like them so that they know that they are not alone in this ever-changing world. These students come from a variety of cultures around the world. Some students were born in the United States, and some have come within the last two years, or even more recently. Students in my classroom have varying educational backgrounds, but with your help, we can give these children culturally appropriate books so that they can be excited about what they read. They will be able to see themselves in texts and will be able to make connections with cultures and people around them.
My Project
Children need to see themselves in classroom curriculum. This project focuses on getting culturally diverse books such as "The Name Jar", and other texts into the hands of students so that they can read and be confident about themselves. The books teach children to be empathetic learners and to help students understand that we come from varying backgrounds and cultures, and these cultures are to be celebrated.
Students will have a higher chance of being interested in reading if they see themselves in the books that they read.
This project has a variety of picture books as well as chapter books so that they can read independently, with the teacher, or in small group instruction so they learn the important skills that will help foster their reading.
