I teach 21 third grade students in a gifted and talented classroom setting. My students come from families who are new to the country. Some of my students require special services. My students come from varied backgrounds with different economic needs. My students are very bright and they seek enrichment activities.
They like to move, they love to read, and they love lots of positive attention.
Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status.
My students are creative, clever, and very spontaneous.
My Project
By donating these books to my classroom the students will be able to learn about different cultures through literature. I am trying to grow my library in a way that my students will encounter characters that are not all alike. These books have characters from India, Africa, Ukraine, and others.
My students come from a wide variety of countries and reading books about where their classmates are from will help promote acceptance of others.
The kids become very excited when they see that book characters can be created to be like themselves and their families. Building a community that celebrates differences is important in my classroom.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
