Bringing Current Events to Our Virtual Learning Classroom

My Students
My diverse twenty-eight first graders are the most eager learners I have ever met. These six- and seven-year-olds come to school every day with a desire to learn despite the many obstacles they face. For one, our school is over a hundred years old, so the building we work in has many issues. Our school is in a high poverty district with little support for technology, books, and necessary classroom supplies.
No matter what, my students are hardworking and dedicated, and they strive to be excellent model citizens.
It is because of these extraordinary students that I work as hard as I do to provide them with the best opportunities. They deserve it!
My Project
Our school has determined that we will go 100% virtual at least the first semester of our school year; therefore, it is necessary for me to have resources at my fingertips. My students in the past have absolutely loved the engaging and educational magazine articles from Scholastic News and Science Spin.
These magazine subscriptions will provide my students with worldly information on their reading level.
One of my favorite things about Scholastic is how easily it can be accessed online. What's even better for my English Language learners and learners who are struggling to read, this magazine has the ability to read aloud to the student. That way every child has the same opportunity to learn. Finally, the material is always intriguing and connects to the core requirements.
As you can see, having access to these magazines will help my students immensely. Since many of my students do not have access to reading materials at home, giving them access to these magazines online will allow my students' equitable learning.
