This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic, fun loving middle schoolers from South Los Angeles. This is a special education English and Reading Intervention class for 7th and 8th graders.
Though they are in middle school, most are performing below 3rd grade level in the area of reading.
This is why independent reading can be a scary and daunting task for my struggling readers. My goal is to structure my class to be a warm and inviting place where learning can feel safe and fun.
My Project
Due to many factors, our school does not offer an art class for our students. There is a severe lack of art education and exposure to art. In my English class I incorporate art not as a side piece but as an integral part of my lessons
These art table easels, black chalk pads, and sponges will continue to help me support the visual learners in my class that need to fully engage in the text with both the written word and their imagination.
Books are meant to come alive both in their minds and with illustrations. Art and stories have always gone hand in hand.
