My Students

The Kindergarten through 2nd grade students at my school are highly motivated, energetic students who love technology. They are exposed to technology through iPads, Chromebooks, interactive white boards, projectors, and TVs--and they can never get enough!

This brilliant group of young people are a diverse group, many of whom hear languages other than English at home or are differently able than their other early elementary peers.

Although expressing themselves orally in English can be a challenge for this group, nothing motivates them to talk with one another like engaging in collaborative problem-solving tasks. If the problem-solving has a techie edge to it, so much the better!

My Project

What could "bee" a better fit for my school than an after school enrichment class where students learn to code using beebots? Although they are surrounded by technology, very few of these brilliant little people have had the opportunity to be a part of the coding community--the community that creates the programs that make these devices so useful to us. Older students have opportunities to learn coding at our school through Scratch and similar coding languages, but our little people can benefit from using hands-on tools like Bee-bots where they can see how their coding directly impacts the world, in a tangible way!

And what a wonderful way to engage families in our learning too?

After the first few classes, once students feel confident, families will be invited for an opportunity to be taught how to code--by their own busy little bees! I can't wait to hear the conversations as families ask their little experts how to operate this device and try it out under their mini-mentor's supervision! I'm so excited to see what happens when we "flip the script" and have adults learn from the next generation of techies. Learning always means so much more when you can teach it--in this case to the ones we love more than anyone else in the universe!
