Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"When you go to the theatre, if you're really involved in the play, you don't think about it - you're in it." - William Kraft

We live in an urban Illinois community with rich cultural opportunities and numerous theatre and music venues.

Unfortunately, few of my students have the opportunity to attend theatre productions because of the expense. Nearly all of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and the cost of a trip downtown and theatre tickets is out of reach for most of our families. Our school population is predominantly Latino, and many students are English language learners. Arts education programming in the schools is minimal as a result of budget cuts. However, the ability to engage in acting is an experience that would deepen the learning and appreciation of the arts for my students.

My Project

I have requested a school visit from Kidworks Touring Theatre so all of our kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students can experience theatre. We make a conscious effort to teach students about social issues and our country's history. Through this project, we will be able to bring two of Kidworks' "African-American History... Live!" performances to approximately 300 primary students, so they can have the opportunity to learn through acting. Actors - and students - don costumes and role play key events in African-American history, including the escape of Harriet Tubman on the Underground Railroad; Rosa Parks' arrest on the Montgomery, Alabama bus; and the ensuing bus boycotts led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Students play the roles of escaping slaves, Rosa Parks, and bus boycotters. By reaching students through viewing, acting, singing, and speaking, students will be able to engage with the content of the plays in meaningful ways.

Viewing, participating in, and discussing these performances would provide many students with a deeper understanding of both history and the arts.

This unique opportunity to have a theatre company visit our school means that hundreds of students can be influenced by the arts in just one afternoon. Thank you for helping our students become patrons of the arts!
