Bring Your Doodles to Life through Animation and Technology.

My students need clay to sculpt their characters during the first phase of an animation project. Later they will build 3-D backgrounds and photograph their subjects.

My Students

Remember elementary school? Perhaps you excelled academically or daydreamed to pass the time. Maybe you doodled in the margins of your paper because your imagination dwelled in the world of super heros or villians. Did you draw knights in battle or damsels in distress? My animators need help.

Our students attend a public elementary school in Northern California with a student population around 530.

This year they walked into a brand new school, with a brand new, fully dedicated computer lab with, for the first time, a full-time computer resource teacher. Our students do well academically, and there is a heavy emphasis on meeting state standards for academic proficiency. They often earn the highest Academic Performance Index (API) in the district. With the heavy emphasis on the core curriculum of reading, writing, and math, some artistically inclined students may not have the chance to develop their skills due to funding cuts or a lack of attention to art.

My Project

I have numerous goals for our students in the area of technology. One area I want to develop includes a focus on animation, which in particular appeals to kids. Our first step begins with Claymation: something similar to the old Gumby and Pokey cartoons I watched in the 60's. I recently attended an animation class at the local high school to see what opportunities would be available to incoming students. That particular high school had recently received a grant to develop a "pipeline" program, preparing students for entry into animation programs at the college level, developing contacts with PIXAR and Disney. While many of our students at the elementary level are proficient in the core curriculum, there are those students who may only excel artistically. Their artistic skills need to be developed so that they have a better sense of what they have to offer and know what courses to pursue when they enter junior high, where they will be faced with pressures from their peers.

Students receiving these materials will begin the first step toward becoming animators.

Once their sculptures are completed, they will then storyboard their ideas with drawings and dialogue. The next step will be to photograph their animations, creating short films using Windows Movie Maker or PowerPoint. They can then pursue paper animation, Lego animation or free drawing on Wacom Intuos tablets, which I hope to purchase in the future.
