Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The moon was but a chin of gold A night or two ago, And now she turns her perfect face Upon the world below. - Emily Dickinson To develop a love of poetry students have to be exposed to a lot of poetry... every day, not just during National Poetry Month. I am lucky that my fourth graders are drawn to poems and beautiful, rich language. I want them to explore poetry each and every day! Students should have the materials to explore the differences between concrete, free verse, limericks, narrative and other forms of poetry. I know once they are immersed in poetry, they will be better able to write their own wonderful, evocative poems. Poetry draws us to listen. Poems play with sound, use intriguing words and create inventive metaphors. Poems can also increase our vocabulary and improve our writing by introducing us to new ways of expressing ourselves. Finally, poetry helps us - and most importantly young learners -- learn to how to look at the world in a new way. I want to establish a large collection of poetry books in my classroom so that my students can have access to great images and words to read and share at our Friday Morning Poetry Circles. I need your help bringing fresh, exciting books of poetry to the 20 young, emerging poets I'm fortunate to teach. With your help, 20 children, year-after-year, can be exposed to a new way of describing the phases of the moon. Thank you, in advance, for your generosity.
