Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Thank you for considering this proposal! I am the teacher of 22 wonderful 1st Grade students at San Pedro St. Elementary School. The school is located in downtown Los Angeles, near the Garment District. It is a 4-Track K through 5 school. Our enrollment consists of 720 students, where 93.5% are English Language Learners and 100% are Socio-economically disadvantaged.

As a First grade teacher I know that the more we read, the better we get at it, and the more we read, the more we enjoy it. To become good readers, students need to be exposed to a variety of genres. Besides the books they can check out from the classroom or the school library, I want my students to read newspapers and magazines to enhance their world knowledge, expand their vocabulary skills and improve their reading fluency. Last year our school paid for a yearly subscription of Time for Kids, an awesome grade-appropriate weekly magazine just for kids. It is written at their reading level, and it touches topics that are relevant for them. Sadly, due to financial difficulties this is not longer a budgeted resource, and I cannot ask parents to pay for the subscription of this weekly reader.

Everyday at the beginning of the day, I have my students read independently for 15 minutes. It would be wonderful if they could have Time For Kids as part of their library repertoire. I have worked with it and it is a wonderful material. It includes reading comprehension and writing activities that follow the readings.

Your help will make it possible for my students to have this wonderful resource at their hands to enhance their reading experience.
