My students need play food, appliances, dolls and blocks to work in their new housekeeping workstations.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
More and more teachers are expected to "teach to the test". Believe it or not, my kindergarteners don't even escape standardized testing. I want to go against that trend and include activities for my kiddos that are more developmentally appropriate--and let's face it--more fun!
I work in an area that is economically depressed.
We have over 90% of our students who qualify for free and reduced lunch. Many come from homes where English is not their primary language. They are bright, curious and always willing to soak up anything you want to teach them. Many of my students did not attend a traditional preschool class, so this is their first foray into the academic experience.
My Project
We have a beautiful housekeeping center and block tables--however, the students don't have materials to work with at those stations. We've been improvising with magazine pictures and empty containers they bring from home, but it's just not the same.
I know what you are thinking: kids need to learn how to read in kindergarten, how to count and add. That's true, and we do cover all those things. But maybe just as importantly, students need to learn social skills and how to play with each other. A housekeeping center helps them learn that. They settle debates--who goes first, who is the mom--and learn how to solve their own problems. They are also learning vocabulary. I can tell you for a fact many of these kiddos can't tell you what a blender is or a spatula. That just might show up in a test passage one day!
With your donation, you would be giving a bunch of five year-olds not only practice in their social skills, but practice learning about each other's families and practice in having fun in school.
It can't only be about filling in bubbles and the data-not in my classroom anyway! You could be responsible for enriching the lives of my little ones and making them more well-adjusted students in the future.
