My Students
There are over 50 million children attending public schools in the United States this year. While that number is staggering, the type of education each student receives dramatically differs depending on where they live and the type of family they were born into. My students attend an elementary school in a rural area of North Carolina. Close to 75% of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch. Despite their backgrounds, I want all of my students to feel successful in school.
I teach in a Title I school where many of my students are already at a disadvantage compared to their wealthier peers.
Despite this, they are eager to learn and I believe that they deserve an equal chance to do so. I want each of them to know that they are somebody important and will make a real impact on this world!
It is my dream that my students come to school eager to learn each day and are disappointed that their time is up when the dismissal bell rings. Having STEM connections to classic fairy tales not only engages children in learning, but also exposes them to STEM concepts.
My Project
Most students hear fairy tales early in their schooling. They are often familiar with these stories and can practically retell them without even looking in a book. Lakeshore’s Fairytale STEM Kits combine these classic tales with real-life problem solving challenges for students to complete. For example, after reading Rapunzel, my students can build her a ladder to get down from her tower. STEM skills are becoming more and more important and these kits are a fantastic way for students to think critically and problem solve.
Being by combining reading with STEM, my students are sure to be more engaged.
