My students need 19 high interest nonfiction books to build their reading skills, an easel, and book baggies to carry them back and forth to school!

My Students
My second graders love to read about real life, but most of their books are stories. They need nonfiction books with bold photographs and easy to read text. They also need to be able to easily bring their books to and from school without them getting lost, wet or ruined.
Our school is an area that was badly affected by Hurricane Sandy.
Many, many students lost their homes and belongings due to flood or fire. In a community where many students already didn't have many books in their homes, these losses were devastating. Our school community is very diverse and includes students from different racial and economic backgrounds. My classroom is an integrated classroom in which students with special needs and typical students are brought together.
My Project
With high quality book baggies, students will be able to bring their books back and forth from home to school and enrich their reading lives. Engaging nonfiction books will catch the interest of my reluctant readers as well as students who need to be challenged to push them to the next level as readers. A tabletop teaching easel will allow me to easily teach small groups of students who need extra reinforcement or enrichment.
Successful readers become successful people!
Help my students open the door to reading and become motivated to become readers for life! Without book baggies, great nonfiction books and small group teaching tools, my students run the risk of failing to develop the reading skills they so desperately need as they engage with the world as students and as citizens.
