This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Seventh grade is one of the most important years for Philadelphia area students because their standardized test scores and grades will decide their high school opportunities. My students are so engaged during independent reading time and I want to offer them as many chances as possible to see both "windows" and "mirrors" into people of many backgrounds. I want my class library to reflect the Puerto Rican, Cuban, Mexican, Cambodian, Vietnamese, and African American faces of my students.
For Philadelphia public school students in the Afro-Latine diaspora, seeing themselves reflected in our classroom library and in our yearlong exploration of geography is essential to building their understanding of the world.
As a teacher of a Humanities curriculum (both English Language Arts and Social Studies) most of my classroom anchor charts and supplies reflect what a typical "English teacher" has and I would love to have more materials for students to reference while learning maps, continents, countries, and regions while we learn important world history relevant to our shared reading books.
