My Students

My students are the reason why I have dedicated my life to this profession. They remind me everyday that I have made the wise choice to stick to it for more than a decade.

My math classroom will be an opportunity for my students to discover that the world cannot function without this subject they are about to learn.

My students are curious about the world and they are ready to explore. They are ready to take on the task for their new year.

My students and I live in a middle-class suburban neighborhood just right outside San Francisco. Almost half of my students are on free and reduced lunch and most of the families are all working class. Despite many hardships, my students are very positive and strive to make the best out of every situation. For this, I am very proud of them and I am here to support them and provide them with the best education possible.

My Project

Some of my students do not have access to technology everyday at home and even something basic as a calculator is difficult for me to demand from them. However, our current math curriculum is completely digital and highly recommends the use of technology for its full potential use.

My students are caught in the middle as the curriculum requires them to use technology on a daily basis but leaves them in the dark with regards to access to them.

As education is moving more towards technology in the 21st century, I want my kids to also follow along, not just imagine. I am requesting the most basic math technical gadget, the calculator, which would make an immense difference in our use of applied mathematics in the classroom. When we are calculating simple interest or finding proportional relationships of a blueprint, many students cannot follow along at the same pace simply due to the absence of a calculator. They know the basics of mathematical operations, but once we get into the thousands and millions, they are not able to keep up since they are doing everything by hand.

When we also find square roots of non-perfect squares, a calculator is a must to find the digit into the thousandths and ten-thousandths place and without a calculator, it makes it very difficult to keep up with the rest of the class. Then it turns out that they miss some parts of the instruction which results into major gaps in their learning.

I'm also requesting a class set of whiteboards for my students. For the last few years I've made my own with sheet protectors and white card stock, but over time into the school year, these will not hold its shape and will discolor. It is difficult to write on them once it becomes worn down.
