My 4th grade boys need books! Less than half of low-income boys in my county are passing 3rd grade reading compared to 61% of low-income girls. Within my inner-city, low-income school, the data is even more troublesome - 65% of 3rd grade girls passed the Language Arts portion of their ISTEP, whereas, only 47% of boys passed the Language Arts portion of the ISTEP. I thought that it would be beneficial to look at the 3rd grade data, because they are my upcoming 4th graders.
To help close the gender gap, my students need books that will meet their interests. Last year, my copies of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" were always being read. Students from other classrooms even came to my room to borrow them. I know that my boys will read (and be excited about it) if they have books that grab their attention.
I've selected books that 4th grade boys (and some girls) will love. I know that when I add these books to our classroom library, the boys will race to get their hands on them. By having books that boys BEG to read, I know that their reading levels will increase.
Please help my students become more proficient readers. By donating to this project, you may be the one that turns a boy into a lifelong reader.
