Bring on the Boom! Learning Music Through Percussion

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn how to read rhythms and music anywhere. Students will learn they can use items at home to continue to learn music through Covid distance learning.

My Students

My students come from varied socioeconomic backgrounds and have very mixed experiences and exposure to music. My students come into music class excited to learn and participate everyday. They are always asking to play instruments and eager to learn about rhythm playing. We have started learning to read rhythms and they are learning fast and are eager to play more and more.

My Project

I will use these materials to get students engaged in learning to read rhythms and music. Students will be able to see that easy household items can continue to help them learn at home in case of distance learning being reinstated. We can easily use the lessons we are learning with these materials to continue our learning at home if the need arises. The rhythm sticks will be used in early instructions as we learn how to read different notes and play them together as a class. We will use the boomwhackers in class as an opportunity to mix the rhythms we are learning with musical notes we are learning. We will set up ensemble groups in our classes with them and give every student the opportunity to play. The buckets and drums will be used in a percussion ensemble opportunity. We will use our knowledge of reading rhythms to play the buckets as drums giving the students the opportunity to play as a group. They will read different rhythms together and work to play as a group.
