Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think back to your 12th grade year of high school. You were probably in the middle of college applications, AP tests, and..."senioritis." The 12th graders in my classes will be facing all of these challenges, but with an added twist: they will probably be the first in their families to ever do so.

I teach 12th grade students at a college prep, public charter high school who attend our school for one primary purpose: they want to be the first person in their family to graduate from college.

They are the founding students of this school, and they have stuck together through thick and thin to get to their final year. The AP Government teacher and I are teaming up to make the year as rigorous and exciting as possible in order to ensure that 100% make it into 4-year colleges.

My Project

In order to offer our students the chance to interact with their world in a unique, modern, and exciting way we would like to subscribe to The New York Times' teen news magazine called Upfront. In 14 biweekly issues, students will engage with reports from New York Times correspondents around the globe on national and international news. The magazine also comes with tons of resources including debates, charts, maps, challenges, online enrichment, and posters that will help to engage students with pertinent issues. We will use these magazines to prompt daily blog writing, model congress debates, persuasive essays, graduation portfolio documents, and group-work.

Many times the students at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder don't engage with the news, policies, and events that affect their lives.

Interacting with current issues, expressing opinions, and engaging with news both in print and online is vital for our students' success in college and ability to participate actively in our democracy. Will you help bring these magazines into our classrooms to ensure that our students have this opportunity?
