Bring Music to the Stage With Bill Carson!

My Students

My students are artists who think about the world and their learning in an abstract way. They come from diverse backgrounds and are all very proud to go to our school, which serves as their home away from home.

My classes are mixed levels, and every student has a particular talent that allows them to shine in and out of the classroom.

They all are committed to various art forms and look for ways to incorporate themes and ideas from our class into their work.

My Project

I am requesting musician Bill Carson to visit my mixed grade level Theatre classroom to teach and perform music from our April play "Like I Am" by Collen Reilly. Students will learn how the music of the time period would have enhanced the play, and they will actually become a "Greek chorus" band that interacts, plays instruments, and sings throughout the production.

In the past decade or so, Bill Carson has written, performed, and recorded music with a great diversity of artists in various contexts, from folk musicology and underground experiments to formal concert works and commissions for theatre, dance, and film.

According to Charleston Magazine, "Bill Carson could have easily carved out a successful life on the road, playing his poetic folk-rock songs, chock-full of raw imagery and emotion, to eager audiences. Instead, Carson is more than satisfied to keep close to home and take the opening slot for pals like Shovels & Rope, who play and write in the same vein..."

The cost of this residency includes the licencing of Carson's music, written specifically for this piece of theatre, and will cover his salary for co-teaching through the month of April.
