Bring Music Education to the Home

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My music students cover all four high school grades and encompass a wide range of ability levels, from beginners with little to no experience to seniors who have been in band since elementary school! The school is in an area of mixed socio-economic backgrounds.

Now more than ever do we owe our students the benefits of arts education.

While there is no substitute for in person rehearsals the music education community had banded together to give every child the opportunity to continue music online.

Over 100 students cover 5 ensembles and pep band. Our bands are popular at sporting events and have performed in Disneyland, the Reno Jazz Festival and the Sonoma State University Invitational.

My Project

The materials in my project with will be used by the students both at home for distance learning and in the classroom upon our return. Several items, the drum pads, drum sticks and valve oil, can usually be shared. It is now necessary for each student to have their own. Even upon the return to the classroom, student will most likely not be allowed to share.

These materials will allow the student to play at home without having to obtaining them on their own.

The reeds for clarinets and saxophones are always one per person. Supplying them will help ensure each student has one.

We will be using software that makes it possible for any student to perform on an instrument at home, record themselves and submit for grading. Platforms such as Canvas, Zoom, Skype allow for 1 on 1 virtual lessons.

I will be able to post sheet music and give playing assignments for recording and submission. This is a method to keep the students playing their instruments until we can return.
