My Students

Engagement: the key to success in our chaotic special education classroom!

Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.

Our school is highly mobile with almost 20% of our students experiencing homelessness. Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredibly resilient. The students that learn in my classroom all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. While my students learn academics, our classroom also has a clear focus of independent, job, and daily living skills. They need explicit instruction in these areas to become as independent as possible. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.

My Project

We are requesting a light table and related manipulatives. A light table is a sturdy, wooden table with a translucent panel across the top. Underneath is a light source (that has the ability to change colors!) so children can play with light in a safe and engaging way. Why a light table? This learning tool will give my sensory seeking students additional visual input as they explore with letter tiles, translucent numbers, colorful shapes, and mirrors through the glow of the table. With this added input, my students will be so much more engaged in their learning and play. Many of my students struggle with hyperactivity, which can make learning so difficult. The calming nature of a light table will help my students "recalibrate" during overly active times, while still participating in something meaningful. I believe this table is something that my students can play with independently, which is so helpful for instructional times.

My students are such unique learners.

In order for them to have a well-rounded school experience, we need so many individualized items. Often, they are expensive and just do not fit into the budget. Your generosity can help my students access meaningful materials that they would never otherwise have. Thank you for supporting my personal heroes - my students!
