My Students

What is it like to only see by using the light around you? My students who are visually impaired have a limited ability to see except for the use of light and reflective surfaces. My students with Autism have difficulties engaging activities without visuals and manipulatives to touch during lessons.

My students attend a public-separate school for students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities.

All of my students are a joy to have in class and each of them enjoy learning. Each of them have a smile that brightens the room up every day. They are all non-verbal, yet that does not hinder their ability to be happy or spread happiness. Half of my class consists of students who are confined to wheel chairs. These students are non-verbal, visually impaired, and need complete care and supervision throughout the day. Assistive technology, reflective materials, and light are utilized during instruction for these students. Other students in my class have a diagnosis of Autism, multiple disabilities, or Intellectual Disability-Severe. These students also need hands-on materials in order to engage math, science, and other subjects throughout the day. Picture symbols and manipulatives are key in the learning process for my students with Autism and other disabilities.

My Project

I am requesting a set of safety mirrors that can be used to reflect light so that my students with visual impairments may see the materials that are placed in front of them. I have also included "Mirrored Observation Trays" so that large materials may be placed on a reflective surface for better viewing by all of my students. These two items will help draw the attention of each of my students toward any object or material that I want my students to show attention toward or engage in a meaningful manner. The "Lakeshore Hands-On Math Trays-Complete Set" will allow me to use small groups(three) in order to teach my students about patterning, graphing, and other math concepts that are based on the curriculum. I have included ten "Unifix 1-10 Stairs" so that my students may touch and see as they count and make patterns. The "Life Cycle Sequencing Kit", "From Seed to Plant Specimen Center", "Life Cycle Specimen Set", and the "Life Cycles Demonstration Kit" to paint a picture of cycles.

My students with visual impairments will be able to see materials in ways that they have not been able to during classroom lessons and activities.

All of my students will be able to place more meaning with the ideas presented to them, whether that be by exploring materials by touch or by varying light and reflective surfaces. I am learning more about my students every day and these materials will greatly assist me in guiding my students in learning and engaging the world around them.
