My Students
My ESE PreK class (iPEEPS) is located in one of Hillsborough County's low-income areas. 100% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Children are placed into my class for a variety of reasons. My class size, the age of my students, and the disabilities my students have varies every year. My class currently has 3 students (and grows throughout the year with short notice). My students have disabilities ranging from Autism, Down Syndrome, visual impairments, and other developmental, social/emotional and language/communication delays. Their personalities and needs are so different. With the age and learning gap, it’s important to have differentiated instruction, engaging activates and to provide one on one or very small group instructions to teach based on each students needs.
My main goals are to teach them how to love school, also to improve their Communication Skills, Independent Functioning Skills and most importantly Social/Emotional Skills.
I want my students to learn how to be loving, kind and independent members of society. I don’t want to create excuses for them; I want to give them (and the people they interact with) the tools and skills they need to be successful.
My Project
A laminator and a printer are essential for all the activities we do in my classroom. Visuals are needed for almost everything. They help bridge the communication and language gaps as well as provide hands-on materials to ensure students are fully engaged. Real life, colored visuals will help my students better understand concepts compared to black and white visuals. Having these items at the ready in my classroom will also allow me to create visuals on the spot, based on my students' current interests that change daily/hourly. I want to ensure I have all the visuals needed to help improve my students' communication and language skills.
These items will help me create daily schedules, communication boards, classroom environment labels, books, behavior charts, parent communication sheets, activities to use in the room and at their homes and picture visuals to use during all lessons.
The thermal laminator will allow me to protect these amazing visuals so they can be used to their maximum potential. It will also allow me to send academic and social activities into the homes of my students to encourage parent involvement.
