My students need the use of a projector to bring their learning to life, to reach them and get them engaged to facilitate positive changes in their abilities to communicate.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a speech pathologist in a low-income and high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
I work with a moderate to severe autistic student populations and the tools I am requesting provide a way to reach the students to help them communicate and bring about positive changes to help them advocate for themselves.
I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My Project
Having the projector will allow for different structures of learning working with the austic and typical students. It will be used to bring the learning to life for my students from pre-K to 5th grade. Students can feel that they are apart of the lessons in an interactive way using learning apps, or watching stories unfold using Speekaboos in a bigger than life view when its projected onto the wall. We had a projector that I was using with my students successfully but it belonged to a different classroom. Having a dedicated projector would allow my students to be fully engaged and participating in activities. For example when using the App "Pet Dr." the students were able to touch the white board and interact, and were motivated to advocate their wants and needs (they have great difficulty doing so because they are not easily motivated). With a projector I can use Apps on the iPad, stories, or boardmaker sentences to facilitate learning with all the students, including my highest performing and most struggling students.
My project will make a difference because, as I said before, these students are the digital natives and it motivates them to communicate.
My students' learning abilities are limitless with this technology and this grant will help to close that gap just a little bit more.
