My students come from the Dorchester neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts. Up to 5 students in each class have severe disabilities, while the remainder of the students will be a mix of students on IEPs and "general education" students. The students at our schools accept and appreciate all types of learners and individuals. We make inclusion a culture that is an example for the rest of the district.
Our student body is highly diverse.
Over 40% of our students have a disability. 77.1% of our students are considered high needs, with over half of them considered economically disadvantaged. Our students are resilient and optimistic about the future. Our students have big dreams and support each other in an environment where everyone is encouraged to reach their full potential.
My Project
This pandemic has been especially challenging for students at my school. We have up to 35% of students with disabilities in each classroom, and they need brightness, joy, color, and accessibility added to their day to make learning enjoyable.
My students will be coming back for in-person learning in March; I aim to give my students a reason to smile when they come into the classroom.
I have requested playful storage bins to organize materials for them on their tables and a reading rug to make the classroom library more inviting. I hope to place the little stools around the room so that students always have a place to sit and open their favorite book.
Please help me make my classroom a welcome place for my students. It has been challenging for students to recover after the special education teacher left. I would like to liven up the room to make learning fun during this challenging time in the interim.
