Do you remember the excitement of the book orders going home in elementary school? I certainly do! I also remember the excitement of bringing home new books! New pictures, new stories, new information.
The K-5 students at our school get excited about learning!
They come from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities which makes them a wonderful group to work with. They have a wide array of interests, passions, and genres to explore!
My Project
Many families have books at home that no one reads any more. Some of these books are great books! I’m sure there is another family that will enjoy having and reading that book. In some cases, families are not in a position to purchase new books because they can be expensive. You can contribute to our effort to put new books in the hands of students by contributing financially, purchasing books, or bringing books to the school so that we have books available to kids. This book exchange will allow families to bring in old books that no one reads any more, and exchange it for a new (or new to them) book that they will read. This project is partially funded by the St. Vrain Valley Education Foundation. I am interested in additional funding to support this project.
Reading with children at home creates warm, happy, and loving associations with story time which increases the likelihood that kids will enjoy reading in the future.
Research also shows that reading at home improves school performance. It will increase vocabulary, improve self-esteem, improve communication skills, and strengthen the prediction engine that is the human brain.
