Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a transfer high school, my school's mission is to serve 17-21 year old students who have struggled to find success in traditional high schools in New York City. Most of our students are African American and Latino, hailing from low-income neighborhoods all over New York City. Some of them travel over an hour each way to attend our school.
Our students are some of the most resilient young people you will ever meet.
They persevere through challenges outside of school and refuse to give up on their education, even when their schools give up on them. By the time they arrive at graduation, our students have overcome tremendous hurdles. We are proud to work with them.
My Project
Imagine entering the classroom and choosing a comfortable seat on the couch, plopping down on the floor with a pillow, bouncing in place at the computers, or curling up with a lap desk or a book. Welcome to the dream of flexible seating for my classroom! Many teachers who have tried flexible seating report that it has transformed their classrooms, making students feel calm and empowered, diffusing behavior issues, and even improving attendance. I want to bring this classroom experience to my own students!
When students enter a space that feels welcoming, calm, and invites them to take ownership over their own experience, they will have more ownership over their learning, too.
At West Side, our students often enter class holding on to stress from earlier in their day or outside of school. Too often, that stress interferes with their ability to focus and engage deeply in class. The physical space matters, and students' needs change and evolve daily. By purchasing these comfortable and unique chairs, rugs, low tables, high tables, and pillows, students will be able to add a whole host of options to the existing furniture (including ball chairs) in the classroom. Lamps and string lighting will allow us to limit the use of the overhead lights, while still providing ample light for students to see.
Clearly defined nooks and groups will help my co-teacher and I do small group work in our classes and support the diverse learners we serve. Overall, the classroom will feel more like entering a college library, which is exactly the sentiment that teenagers building their independence deserve to feel in school. I am eager to develop a classroom environment that helps students to focus, facilitates collaboration, supports social-emotional needs, and fosters independence!
