This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are the kindest and most motivated kids I know. They come to class and have meaningful discussions about difficult topics; they consistently surprise me with their insight and depth of knowledge.

Our high school is part of an inner-city, low-income school district.

These kids are used to always getting furniture and books and supplies that are bottom of the barrel and classrooms that are more institutional than inviting; however, they show up every day willing to look beyond those hardships and make the most of each day.

Furthermore, all of my students have taken the extra step to success by signing up for advanced classes and degree programs that require much more of them than the average student. With the IB program, my students are striving to receive not only their high school diploma but also an International Diploma that could get them into any international program. One my current students wants to become an interpreter for the UN, and she wants to start by going to college in France. She already speaks three languages!

These kids are amazing, and they deserve the absolute best that we can offer.

My Project

So often our English classes get stuck in the 20th century with document cameras and projectors, while the science and math classes receive the newest technology. I would like to offer my students a chance to also experience English class with new technology and capabilities.

A tablet connected to my digital projection screen will allow me to model essays, revise and edit student essays in front of the class, and even allow students to show their own work to each other.

It is vital that students see good writing, learn how to revise their own writing, and help each other with writing. It is my hope that this tablet will change the way we learn how to write as a class.

The printer will also be for students. While teachers at my school have plenty of access to printers and copiers, students rarely do. Our class is based on research and projects and students teaching students. This is made much more difficult for students when they do not have access to a printer to accomplish these tasks. When they teach a lesson to the class, they often want to print notes and activities for their fellow students. At times they need to print essays for peer edits or for revision. They may need to print academic articles. This printer will make all of this much easier for students.

Finally, the USB chargers are to try and mitigate the distraction of cell phones in class. By creating a charging station in a corner of the room, it is more likely that students will charge their phones instead of being distracted by them in class. It's a way to encourage good behavior rather than punish bad behavior. Many studies have shown that this is more effective to get desired behavior from teens.
