My Project
A new 3D printer will give our students a chance to turn the designs they imagine into reality! Being able to prototype and generate physical representations of design elements is an important part of any engineering project. Having access to a 3D printer allows our team to spend less time and effort fabricating a concept and more time iterating and improving a concept. This is especially important for our robotics team, seeing as we are only given a short period of time to design, build, and test our robot before competing with it.
3D printers are increasingly being used in industry and a new 3D printer will give students exposure to this important technology in a setting where their designs will undergo real-world tests.
Many 3D printers now can reliably print strong, functional parts using engineering-grade materials. Giving our team the opportunity to use a printer that can handle more durable materials will go a long way in terms of helping our team finish our robot quickly and efficiently. A printer with a high level of accuracy will also make sure the designs that our students create are replicated with fidelity, allowing them to be created consistently if the robot needs multiples of the same part.
Using a 3D printer gives students the opportunity to move from Computer Aided Design (CAD) to Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), allowing our students to gain valuable experience in not just the use of engineering software, but in fleshing out their ideas with manufacturability in mind. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to apply their problem-solving skills to modify their designs and quickly create changes that can adapt to how the robot performs. The skills that our students will gain from learning to use this 3D printer will lead them to gain knowledge that is so valuable.
