The more you know, the more you want to know. At least, my students have discovered this to be true as we explore current events together. Conversations about the recent presidential election or the economic crisis lead to new questions and investigations into related issues. I teach fifth graders in a high-poverty public school. Our current events time is filled with conversation, reflection, reading, and writing - and provides students with the opportunity to grow as citizens of the globe.
However, many of my students lack the resources needed to access daily news about current events. Most newspapers and online reports are printed above their reading level. It is a daily struggle to find accurate and high-quality texts about current events and world news.
Time For Kids is a publication designed by educators for students. This weekly newsletter is filled with relevant, interesting, and appropriately leveled articles about current issues in the world. With 30 weekly subscriptions to Time For Kids, my fifth graders would have guaranteed access to the world around them in a format that meets them at their level.
Your help will ensure that my students continue talking, reading, and writing about the world around them. You will make it possible for them to learn about the issues that affect our lives, and in doing so, will infect them with the desire to continue this learning once they walk out the classroom door.
