My Students
"Achievement gaps" is one of the latest "buzz phrases" flying around in education. However, this is a real thing that exists in many urban classrooms. Until more boys are introduced to exciting stories that capture their hearts and minds, a gap is likely to continue.
My students live in an urban neighborhood in Pennsylvania.
The vast majority of them qualify for free lunch and some of them have even been homeless in the last 12-24 months. They attend a school that is "up-and-coming" in the district, yet our scores in reading lag behind those in math, especially for the boys. My students try hard, but some of the boys just have not found a good book to keep them interested.
My Project
The resources I am requesting are a series of grade-appropriate books for my 7th and 8th grade students. The main focus is to find books suitable for young men, as my goal is to help lower the achievement gap in reading between the boys and girls in my school. However, I do wish to have books for the young ladies in my room to read as well, so I have included a few that may intrigue them as well. I have also included some 6th grade books, with the hopes that this would not exclude any of my students who are not the strongest readers from finding a book they could work with on their own.
Do you remember staying up late into the night reading when you were a kid, not being able to put your book down?
I want to get the boys a book that will keep them up late at night on the edge of their seats, promising themselves just one more page before they wash up and go to bed. If that sounds like a familiar experience to you, now imagine growing up and not ever having it. I want to help the boys find that book that keeps them coming back for more.
