Try to imagine the size of cells and the DNA trapped within the nucleus. Microscopic concepts can be difficult for students to grasp and believe. However, advancements in Biotech and Nanotech touch their lives everyday. It would be great for them to be able to do experimentation themselves.
We are a rural school district.
A lot of our students are from the farming community. They are open to learning more about the advancements in science and how these advancements can help them with their understanding of what they read about or see on television. Some individuals have also expressed interest in more research and experimentation in the field of biotech, agritech, and genetics.
My Project
Currently, my students extract DNA from wheat germ and see a white string. So they know it exists. My students need the Electophoresis sets and the dual power supply. With this equipment we will be able to do DNA electrophoresis right in our classroom. This will enable students to learn about the following: making gels, pipetting techniques, run DNA, discover polymerase differentiation, PCR importance, perform pseudo paternity cases, and investigate species identification through DNA work. All of these concepts are discussed in their readings and lecture but the true learning and understanding concepts happens through "doing" it with hands on experience.
My students will have a higher level of science literacy which will enable them to make informed decisions in their own lives.
These decisions will range from understanding of stem cell research, donor matching of tissues and organs, Biotech advancements to career opportunities.
