My Students

I am a teacher at a very large middle school with around 1,500 students. I teach 7th grade this year and personally have 180 energetic, motivated students who enter my classroom on a daily basis.

I teach three science classes a day on a 90-minute block schedule on an A-B schedule with six classes in all.

Each class is filled with different energy levels and different capabilities. I have students with learning disabilities, ADHD, big hearts, and gifted abilities. Each of my students are different and I am trying to individualize their education as much as possible.

My students are interested in many things, including sports, music, and art. We incorporate all of these things into our science class, especially 30 second dance parties to celebrate our successes. My students are silly, social, loving, and, above all, motivated.

My Project

The majority of my 180 students have brand new backpacks that were purchased for them at the beginning of the school year. They are able to carry all of their materials and fit their district-provided chromebooks from class to class.

The students that can't afford a new backpack or one at all unfortunately stand out among the rest.

We require students to use a backpack to transport their chromebooks safely from class to class and the students without a decent one are easily separated from the group.

I want all of my students to be able to learn on an even playing field. Learning new material is hard enough if you are worried about not being able to take your materials to your next class. I want my students that aren't fortunate enough to purchase their own backpacks to have one that is theirs to own and take care of.
