My Students

Students don't remember days in science when they were completing worksheet after worksheet. Students remember the experiments and active lessons in science when they were able to see science come into life!

My students come from what is known as the lowest performing school in the city.

They have witnessed many teachers come and go. We are a school that is transforming and constantly improving ourselves- but it takes time. Most of my students live right here in the neighborhood and they are so closed in that they have never experienced anything outside of their community. There is a high rate of violence in this area and they have seen things that we can only imagine. Sadly but truly, my kids have all seen a shooting taken place right in front of their eyes. It is heartbreaking. Through it all, they still show up every day, eager to learn and wanting to be successful. Although statistically, our scores are the lowest in the entire city, they are slowly improving every year. This is just a testament to how capable my students are. I know that they can do anything they desire. They just need people to have some faith in them.

My Project

I have 2.5 hours to teach my students math, science AND social studies. Because of the limited time, my students have rarely had science and social studies' lessons. Not only is this an injustice to our students, but our scores reflect the fact that our students are not gaining science skills. Less than 10% of the 5th graders at my school, for instance, received even a "proficient" on their state benchmarks. Please help me change this sad reality. Science is imperative. Science opens the doors to countless careers. It fosters critical thinking skills. Please help my students take back their right to a proper education!

With these resources, I can see my 5th and 6th grade students and the 7th and 8th grade students in the school actively engaged in science lessons.

I can see my students curiously questioning every step we take in our experiments. I can see my students excited to be problem solvers, figuring out what is happening in front of their very eyes. Most of all, I see my students having fun while learning. I see my students leaving the classroom with insight and knowledge to share with the world.
