Help me give my students STEM building kits, counting beads, gems, rocks, candies, sweet treats and light up incentives for a sweet and bright STEM and Math challenge and celebration.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our classroom is a flourishing hub of growth and development that includes children from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds – born overseas or here in the United States – who are beginning transitional kindergarten and kindergarten. For all children, starting school is a time of major transition for both the children and their families, but for children that have just immigrated to the United States or that are just learning to understand and speak the English Language, beginning school is not only about adjusting to school and its routines, but also about doing so in a largely unfamiliar culture and language.
Hands on mathematics and engineering activities provide young English learners with multi-sensory input that not only helps them learn math and science content, but it also helps them develop language structures related to both content areas and collaborative conversations.
The STEM magnetic building blocks and engineering building blocks will give students the opportunity to plan, execute, test, and revise buildings, bridges and structures in partnership with classmates. The labels and lamination sheets will provide durable pictorial task challenges for the STEM builds. The polished rocks, acrylic beads, pony beads, and charms will give students collections of objects to physically count so they can build both language and number sense. The candies and frosting will give students a hands on edible counting lesson in treat decorating, and the light up fiber wand sticks and glasses will give students an incentive to work for, and a way to celebrate their "bright" STEM minds.
