Each day, my students walk into my classroom full of wonder and potential. My school is located on the south side of Chicago and as a teacher, in a high poverty area, my goal is to tap into that promise! My hope is to provide books for them to borrow to bridge the ever-widening economic achievement gap.
One of the best indicators of academic success is how much children are read to at home.
Sadly, many of the families I serve do not have books. In my classroom, children are able to take books home each week to read and return the following week. By providing books for my students, I know they can grow academically and create a love of reading that will last a lifetime.
Reading to preschool aged children creates the foundation for lifelong success. By donating to my project, you can help make that happen! My classroom will receive beautiful, new books that I will read to the class and the children will be able to borrow and return weekly. The books I have requested are culturally rich. They relate to our units of study and are of great interest to growing brains!
Reading aloud encourages their relationship building, academic aptitude, speech and language development and increased concentration in young children.
These books will also encourage parents to read with their children each day and make positive connections to their children's academic achievement. There are few things in children's cognitive development that are more important than reading, and we need your help to ensure that can happen!
