This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What I love most about my students is their energy, joy, and incredible determination. Every day, they come in with big smiles and open hearts, ready to take on challenges many of us could never fully understand. My students have a wide range of special needs—including autism, Down syndrome, and cognitive moderate disabilities—and each one brings something truly special to our classroom community.

We are in Paterson, New Jersey—an urban area where opportunities for children with disabilities are incredibly limited.

Many of our families are low-income and struggle to access even basic resources. Inclusive programs, especially in physical education, are nearly nonexistent.

Accessible playgrounds are few. Most gyms lack adaptive equipment. The simple joys many children experience—like joining a soccer game, hitting a volleyball, or just running in a safe space—are often out of reach for my students.

That’s why this project matters. For my students, physical activity isn’t just about exercise—it’s essential for building motor skills, easing anxiety, improving focus, and boosting self-esteem. But right now, we don’t have the equipment we need to give them these experiences.

These kids are already fighting uphill battles—at school, at home, and in a community where the odds are stacked against them. But when they’re given a chance to move, play, and feel included, everything changes. They light up. They grow stronger. They believe in themselves.
