My Students

My students are amazing kids who face many challenges both at home and at school. My students all have various disabilities, but they don't let their disabilities hold them back.

All of my students are unique, but one thing is the same in each of them: they love to learn!

My students come from a variety of backgrounds and face many challenges before even entering our school. We work together every day to overcome those challenges and reach new heights. I work with about 75 special education students every week, reaching kids with various disabilities. My students love to move, explore and play.

My Project

Many of my students with special needs, struggle to form friendships with other kids. Because making friends is such a challenge for many of my kiddos, we work on building friendship skills as much as we can. We also try to create real-life opportunities for my students to practice these skills. One of the ways we have created these real-life opportunities is to create a Peer to Peer program at our school. This program pairs my students with disabilities and children without disabilities and gives them opportunities to practice their friendship skills with fun activities. We have made play dough, finger painted, blown bubbles and enjoyed snacks together.

Many of my students with disabilities feel left out and like they don't have any friends or a group to belong to when they are at school and making shirts to wear as a group will be a visual reminder that they do have friends and that they are a welcome and important part of our school community.

We will dye our shirts as a group, practicing our sharing skills, our communication skills, and our overall friendship skills. Then, once the t-shirts have been made bright and beautiful, we will iron on our school logo (printed with ink) which will help my students feel like they are members of our school community. We will wear our tie-dyed shirts to school which will give my students an opportunity to feel like they are part of a group of friends- which they will be!

This project will allow each child, special needs and without, to have the chance to make a special, colorful tie dye shirt celebrating friendship and our program. These shirts will give our kids a feeling of belonging, which because of their disabilities, they haven't felt before.
