Bridging the Gap

My Students

Even though my students are considered low-income/high poverty, they are rich beyond measure. They bring a wealth of experiences and are encouraged to share their unique voices, points of view, and innovative ideas. I empower my students with the engineering design process so they can learn to identify and solve community issues to impact their world.

Hands-on experiences engage students, helping them connect to learning, apply new understandings, and further inspire them to study STEAM-related fields.

Funding for STEAM elective has been declining and the need for STEAM-related skills is increasing. Our students need access to opportunities that prepare them for jobs that do not yet exist.

My Project

In today's complicated world, it is important that students critically analyze both sides of issues in order to understand more than their own point of view. In "Bridging the Gap", students will follow the Engineering Design Process to document from idea to presentation as they construct mathematically accurate scale models of their bridges while also researching, investigating, writing, and presenting issues that divide our communities.

Allowing students to create bridges literally and write about them in an effort to understand and respect diverse points of view, STEM students will explore elements of culture that are personal to their team and suggest solutions to the driving question, "How do we bridge the gap"?

Students working in teams will research the elements of culture and choose one to further pursue. Through investigation, students will identify issues that divide and suggest viable solutions to help us "Bridge the Gap". With empathy as a guide, students will try to understand both sides of the divide in an effort to bring people together.

Products include an physical bridge that will be tested to failure, mathematically accurate scale drawings of their bridge, a research paper, and a presentation video.
