My students need 5 Chomebooks to help increase their digital literacy, access digital tools and resources, and, ultimately, bridge the achievement gap in this digital world.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Entering middle school is always a huge transition. My students come from all walks of life, with different attitudes, cultures, backgrounds, thoughts, feelings, and personalities. They are all artists of some sort--- musicians, writers, actors and actresses, dancers, visual artists, and photographers-- admitted into one of the best arts schools in Miami.
With limited technology within our school, and a recent cellphone ban adding additional limitations, it is important to provide these brilliant minds with the opportunities they deserve to help them prepare for a successful future as well-rounded adults.
My goal as an educator is to ensure that I am able to foster and develop the flame within each of them as they embark on this new journey. My classroom is their gateway to deeper knowledge, greater understanding, and a more fulfilled life!
With funding always being an obstacle in education, I would love to find a way for my students to have technological resources at their fingertips on a daily basis.
My Project
How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of student success and school-wide data indicates that students will benefit from obtaining digital literacy. With the increasing shift towards computer-based testing, students must become better acquainted with using technology for more than just texting and socializing.
My students need 5 Chromebooks to help develop a much-needed technology center within the classroom.
Through the help of Donor's Choose, I have been able to provide limited opportunities for my students to utilize technology during class. Currently, my students are limited to sharing only four Chromebooks each class period. As a result, many students do not get the opportunity to use the devices and many of them have the additional obstacle of lacking technology at home.
Ideally, the Technology Center will have 12 Chromebooks available so that I am able to provide daily opportunities for technology use to all of my students. Adding Chromebooks to the classroom will allow my students to utilize several online resources each day to improve their reading comprehension, typing, grammar, and test-taking skills.
Our students are capable, future-ready, self-directed learners who would not only access digital tools and resources to further their knowledge and skills, but would also innovate, curate, and collaborate to showcase their 21st-Century digital products. With daily access to these tools, I believe my students will not only excel on state-mandated tests, but also develop into the type of next generation, college-ready learners we need more of in our society. Will you choose to team with us to achieve this goal today?
