Bridging the Gap in Literature

Help me give my students a chance to read the same novels as their peers but at a more appropriate reading level. These reading materials allow my students to participate in classroom activities.

My Students

Our charter school opened its doors in 2015. We currently serve students in Kindergarten through twelfth grade. Our class of 2020 will be our first graduating class. Our students also live in a very rural community and qualify for a free or reduced-price lunch.

The school serves students who have an IEP or 504 Plan and have documented disability(ies) such as Hearing Impairments, Visual Impairments, Specific Learning Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Autism, and/or Speech/Language Impairments.

Students with disabilities are included in the general education curriculum and graduate with a General Education Diploma.

My Project

Students with disabilities often struggle in the general education classroom. These materials will help bridge the gap by allowing my students to read the same materials as their peers as well as allowing them to participate in classroom discussions and activities.

The materials selected have been chosen based on individual student needs.

These books focus on story line, plot, character development, etc. instead of the text complexity. Some are graphic novels for visual learners and large print for students with visual impairments. Others are written at a lower reading level while staying true to the original stories. These books will allow my students to be successful in the general education classroom.
