Bridging the Gap for Inner City Students

My Project

As an ELA teacher who educates in an urban area, my students don't always have access to books the way that they should. This school year, I desire to create a print-rich environment that includes leveled readers to accommodate the different reading levels within my classroom with an accompanying cart to store them. Additionally, I want my students to have access to 'mirror' and 'window' books. Mirror books allow them to see characters like them in the books they read whereas window books allow them to get a peek into the lives and viewpoints of others.

A variety of books gives my students a chance to increase their reading abilities due to learning loss from the pandemic as well as provides them a chance to read books of interest so that their love of reading continues to grow.

Lastly, the journals catered to daily language, phonics, and sight word practice will allow me to provide my students with extra practice in these areas. The students I serve love having workbooks that belong to them and it increases their desire to learn. Thank you for helping me so that I can help them!
